The Meth Epidemic

I believe that drugs should not be legalized. Looking at what our nation is like now, with drugs that are not legal, we can see the detriment they are causing. If we make drugs legal the death rate, as well as many other indirect consequences of drug use, will increase. Making drugs legal is just another way of saying that its ok to do them and the consequences won't be very severe. Although drugs are not legal right now, people still use them. They will continue to use them and I don't really see a way that they (the population as a whole) will stop. Individuals with support from family and friends and a visit to rehab might be able to overcome their addiction, but there isn't very much hope for the majority of the rest. If we make drugs legal this will just make things worse. If alcohol was illegal I think there would probably be less alcoholics because it wouldn't be as easily accessible and younger kids wouldn't be exposed to it as much.

Food Inc.

This movie made me realize how much the major food companies control the economy and those that work for them. Some of the farmers shown in the video were scared to say anything because they knew they would probably get tracked down by the companies they supply and either get sued, fired, or any number of severe punishments. I was also surprised at all the government officials that have ties to the major food companies. This means that the companies can get away with alot because they have representatives in the government there to help get what they want. It is amazing that no body can really do anything about it either.I always knew that the stuff we buy in grocery stores isn't always as healthy as they make it out to be. My family doesn't really worry about this stuff too much though, because we have a pretty good understanding of how to eat healthy. I think some improvements on this system should include giving the farmers themselves more power over their own production, and eliminating things like the private investigators that sneak around the farms. The latter probably won't ever happen just because of the control the big companies have, but it is still something that would improve the system. As an individual I can boycott certain foods, and only buy the ones that are healthy. It won't have a huge effect, but it can maybe help over time as others follow suit.

4-12-2010

Some of my interests include playing softball, singing, sleeping, eating, acting, and being outside in the sun (when it is out). I don't really enjoy blogging, but I guess it is a good way to talk without really being in the classroom. I don't really get on the computer very often, so when I have a blogging assignment it is kind of an inconvenience for me. In this class I hope to learn how to keep my body healthy for later years. It is important to stay healthy and I hope i can do that. Some of my life goals include going to a good college and graduating, getting married and starting a family, and hopefully having a good job so I can support that family. I don't really have a career in mind or even possible college chosen yet, but I have been thinking alot about it lately. I just can't make up my mind.
